Autism: Brainwaves 'show risk from age of six months'

Child spelling autism
Spotting autism earlier can help with treatment, it is believed
It may be possible to detect autism at a much earlier age than previously thought, according to an international team of researchers.
A study published in Current Biologyidentified differences in infants' brainwaves from as early as six months.
Behavioural symptoms of autism typically develop between a child's first and second birthdays.
Autism charities said identifying the disorder at an earlier stage could help with treatment.
It is thought that one in every 100 children has an autism spectrum disorder in the UK. It affects more boys than girls. While there is no "cure", education and behavioural programmes can help.
One of the researchers, Prof Mark Johnson from Birkbeck College, University of London, told the BBC: "The prevailing view is that if we are able to intervene before the onset of full symptoms, such as a training programme, at least in some cases we can maybe alleviate full symptoms."
His team looked for the earliest signs of autism in 104 children aged between six and 10 months. Half were known to be at risk of the disorder because they had on older sibling who had been diagnosed with autism. The rest were low risk.
Older children with autism can show a lack of eye contact, so the babies were shown pictures of people's faces that switched between looking at or away from the baby.
Sensors attached to the scalp looked for differences in brain activity.
In low-risk babies, or high-risk babies that did not develop autism, there was a large difference in the brainwaves when looking at each type of image.
There was a much smaller difference in the brainwaves of babies who developed autism.
'Very effective'
Prof Johnson said: "It is important to note it is not a 100% predictor. We had babies who flagged up warning signs who did not develop autism."
There were also babies who did develop autism who had low-risk brainwaves. The test would need to be more accurate before it was used routinely.
Prof Tony Charman, Centre for Research in Autism and Education at the Institute of Education, said: "Differences in the use of eye gaze to regulate social interaction are already a well-recognised early feature in many children with autism from the second year of life.
"Future studies will be required to determine whether measurements of brain function such as those used in our study might one day play a role in helping to identify children at an even earlier age."
Christine Swabey from the charity Autistica said: "The hope is that this important research will lead to improved identification and access to services for future generations.
"Ultimately, the earlier we can identify autism and provide early intervention, the better the outcomes will be."
Dr Georgina Gomez-de-la-Cuesta from the National Autistic Society said: "Further research to investigate these differences will eventually lead to earlier recognition of the condition.
"Early intervention is very effective in supporting those with autism, so recognition in infancy can only be beneficial in helping individuals with autism reach their full potential.
"However, this important research is still in its early stages, and larger studies looking at several early markers of autism will be necessary before a robust clinical diagnosis could be possible at such a young age."

PIP breast implant boss Jean-Claude Mas faces charges BBC Report

Jean-Claude Mas
Mr Mas told police his employees were ordered to hide the silicone
The owner of a French breast implant maker that sparked a safety scare faces charges of "involuntary injury", his lawyer says.
He said Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) founder Jean-Claude Mas, 72, had been freed on bail of 100,000 euro ($130,000).
In 2010, France banned PIP implants made with the low-grade silicone, amid fears they could rupture and leak.
Up to 400,000 women in 65 countries are believed to have been given implants.
Mr Mas remained at his home in Six-Fours-les-Plages, in the South of France, while police searched it - as required by French law. He was later taken to the national police station in Marseilles.
'Nothing to say'
His lawyer, Yves Haddad, told AFP news agency: "He is not well, he is tired and he is waiting for his doctor."
Mr Mas has been under investigation since he revealed in a police interview last year that PIP ordered employees to hide the unauthorised silicone when inspectors visited its factory.
It was thought that he would be investigated for manslaughter but although Mr Mas is still considered a suspect, his lawyer told Reuters news agency that "on the charge of involuntary homicide [manslaughter], the judge decided that for now there is no link".
A lawyer representing women who had been fitted with PIP implants said he welcomed the arrest of Mr Mas.
"This is a relief. It's come late, but at least it's happened," Philippe Courtois said.
"He's been placed in preventive detention. Let's see in the coming hours what his interrogation by the investigating magistrate brings. But what we're really hoping for is his formal investigation, under remand in custody, just to make sure that he doesn't leave French soil during the investigation."
Mr Mas told police in an interview last year that PIP had deceived European safety inspectors for 13 years.
But he has insisted they posed no threat to health and attacked the French authorities for offering to pay for their removal because it put women through a "surgery risk".
He also said he had "nothing" to say to women facing surgery for their removal and that victims had only filed complaints "to make money".
Excerpts from Mr Mas's interview have been re-examined by a French magistrate.
In France, 30,000 women have been advised to remove the implants and 2,700 have filed complaints against Mr Mas.
'Medically necessary'
Women in 65 countries - mainly in Latin America and elsewhere in Europe - have received implants made by the company, which closed down in March 2010.
Health officials in Germany, the Czech Republic and Venezuela have advised women to have them removed.
But the medical advice in the UK, where 40,000 are affected, is that there is no need for all the implants to be removed, only those causing problems such as pain or tenderness.
In England, patients fitted with PIP implants by the NHS will have them replaced by the health service, while it will remove implants from private patients if their clinics refuse. The NHS in Wales said it would replace implants only when it was deemed medically necessary.
Debbie Lewis has paid over £6,000 to have her burst PIP implants replaced

Women in Northern Ireland who received PIP implants for health reasons will have them replaced, but the NHS will only remove, not replace, those inserted for cosmetic reasons.
Scotland's Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said concerned women who had them fitted privately would be offered advice and the option of removal if necessary. There are no records of PIP implants being used by the NHS.
On Thursday, two more private firms in the UK said they would remove PIP implants free of charge.
Transform, which has just over 4,000 UK patients with the implants, had originally said patients would have to pay for removal. It now says those who have had the implants fitted since 2001 can have free removal - but will have to pay around £2,500 for replacements.
Those who had replacements since 2006 may still be within their warranty period and would therefore get both removal and replacement for free.
The Hospital Group also announced it would offer free removal for patients who had PIP implants fitted between 2001 and 2009 - but would charge between £1,500 and £3,500 for replacements.
The international police agency Interpol has said Mr Mas is wanted in Costa Rica over a drunk driving charge.
It said the "red notice" over an alleged incident in June 2010 was "totally unconnected" to PIP.

Benefits Of Teeth Whitening Kits

By

Right now, it is easier and more convenient than ever to have a dazzling white smile. While there are several options that are offered in a dental office, such as laser treatment, special trays, or other types of whitening treatments, there are also a number of high quality teeth whitening kits that are at the disposal of the common person. If you are considering the use of a special kit for whitening your teeth, you may be wondering about the different options, prices and benefits of teeth whitening kits. As you are more aware of the positive aspects of these kits, you will be better able to see how they can fit into your daily life and routine.
One of the reasons that many people choose to use at home whitening kits is that they are very cost effective. Because many insurance companies do not cover cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening, you are likely to pay a high premium to have this treatment done at the dentist. By using a kit in the comfort of your own home, you can actually achieve results that are strikingly beautiful at a fraction of the cost. Different kits can vary somewhat in price, depending on the type of treatment, the duration of the treatment, and even the results. When you choose to whiten your teeth at home, the kits are very affordable and convenient.
Another advantage to using whitening kits is that they are very portable. Therefore, they can easily fit into any schedule or routine. While some people would prefer to use the kit when they first wake up, others are more inclined to do their teeth whitening before bed. Still others have learned that the best time for them is while they are at the office. You can even use teeth whitening kits when you are on vacations or business trips. They are small, simple, and easy to transport so you don't have to worry about bringing them with you wherever you go.
The results of at home whitening can actually be quite remarkable. Due to the differences in treatment, there are kits that will work for nearly anyone. In fact, many dentists recommend that people use one of the various types of teeth bleaching products regularly so that they will be able to maintain that beautiful smile. Those who have particularly stained teeth may even choose to use their kit for an extended period of time for optimal results. These kits allow you to control the brightness of your smile so that it will get progressively whiter over time.

Fried food 'fine for heart' if cooked with olive oil BBc Report

They found no heightened risk of heart disease or premature death linked to food that had been cooked in this way.
But the investigators stress that their findings, from studying the typical Spanish diet in which these "healthy" oils are found in abundance, do not apply to lard or other cooking oils.
So traditional fry ups should not be the order of the day, bmj.com reports.
When food is fried it becomes more calorific because the food absorbs the fat of the oils.
And experts know that eating lots of fat-laden food can raise blood pressure and cause high cholesterol, which are risk factors for heart disease.
For the study, the researchers at the Autonomous University of Madrid surveyed 40,757 adults about their diet.
The participants were asked about what types of food they ate in a typical week and how that food was prepared and cooked.
None of the adults had any sign of heart disease at the start of the 11-year study, but by the end of it 606 heart disease events and 1,134 deaths had occurred.
When the researchers looked at these heart events in detail, they could find no link with fried food in the diet.
This, they believe, is down to the type of oil the food is cooked in.
The Med diet
In an accompanying editorial, Professor Michael Leitzmann from the University of Regensburg in Germany said: "Taken together, the myth that frying food is generally bad for the heart is not supported by available evidence.
"However, this does not mean that frequent meals of fish and chips will have no health consequences.
"The study suggests that specific aspects of frying food are relevant, such as the oil used, together with other aspects of the diet."
Mediterranean diets have long been hailed as healthy, being packed full of low-fat, high-fibre fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh fish.
And numerous studies have shown a balanced diet such as this can cut the risk of illnesses like cancer and heart disease.
Victoria Taylor, a senior heart health dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said: "Before we all reach for the frying pan, it's important to remember that this was a study of a Mediterranean diet rather than British fish and chips. Our diet in the UK will differ from Spain, so we cannot say that this result would be the same for us too.
"Participants in this study used unsaturated fats such as olive and sunflower oil to fry their food. We currently recommend swapping saturated fats like butter, lard or palm oil for unsaturated fats as a way of keeping your cholesterol down and this study gives further cause to make that switch.
"Regardless of the cooking methods used, consuming foods with high fat content means a high calorie intake. This can lead to weight gain and obesity, which is a risk factor for heart disease. A well-balanced diet, with plenty of fruit and veg and only a small amount of high fat foods, is best for a healthy heart."

Snapping Hip Syndrome: The "Dancers" Plague

By

Snapping hip syndrome is closely related to hip flexor tendonitis, but has a few subtle differences. The main difference and symptom is hearing or feeling a 'snap' when the hip flexor is activated (the leg is lifted in some manner). This doesn't always cause pain, but it usually does, with relief experienced after resting.
Much like hip flexor tendonitis, anyone who is fairly active is at risk of developing snapping hip syndrome. It's often referred to as 'dancers hip' as it is fairly common for dancers to develop this due to the repetitive movements they perform in training. Anytime someone is running or training physically a lot there is a risk of developing the injury. However, unlike other forms of tendonitis, this injury is usually only caused as a direct result of the activity being performed, as opposed to old age.
Snapping Hip Syndrome Diagnosis
In comparison to other hip flexor injuries, snapping hip syndrome is very simple to diagnose. If you feel or hear a snapping feeling while performing a common movement, along with some degree of hip flexor pain, you have developed the syndrome. This snapping sound is caused by the hip flexor tendon movement when the muscles are transitioned from contracting (lifting knee up) to relaxing (knee falling down). It is very important to catch this as soon as possible, otherwise it can be a chronic hip flexor injury plaguing you for years.
Two Main Types of Snapping Hip Syndrome
Lateral Extra Articular
This is the most common type of the syndrome which occurs when either the IT band or Gluteus Medius tendon slides back and forth across a part of the pelvis called the greater trochanter.
Medial Extra Articular
The other way snapping hip syndrome can occur, is if the Illiopsoas tendon gets caught on the front of the hip, most commonly on the anterior inferior iliac spine. If you have read about hip flexor tendonitis, you will notice that this is the same tendon that is usually inflamed, which is why these two injuries often have overlapping issues.
Treatment
Treating snapping hip syndrome is a little tougher than diagnosing it. There are many reasons that the tendon may not be functioning properly: inflammation, damage, muscular imbalances, postural issues, and more. If you are not sure what caused your injury I would urge you to see a doctor, they can perform tests and scans to isolate the issue which will make treatment easier.
To correct any strengthening imbalances you need to test the relative strength of all opposing muscle groups, most importantly in this case are your hip flexors/Gluteus Maximus and quad/hamstring combinations. If there is an alarming strength difference in one of the movements, look to correct it through strengthening exercises.
If the injury only 'activates' when you train for an extended period, most likely you have an inflamed tendon. This should be treated similarly to hip flexor tendonitis with the PRICE recovery procedure and rest. If you absolutely must train try taking a low dose anti-inflammatory medication beforehand.
If you are an extremely serious athlete there is also the option to get an injection if you have an inflamed bursa (the fluid sac that tendons rest on). The most common injection is corticosteroids which are anti-inflammatory that last for weeks and depending on the dosage months. Unfortunately this also comes with many undesirable side effects.
Once the issue has healed, make sure you strengthen the affected areas slowly before resuming full activity. This will prevent the issue from becoming a chronic injury that affects you for a long time.

Bikini Laser Treatment: Get Smoother Skin

By

Bikini laser treatment can help remove unwanted hair. The process can help you be smoother longer. Some women choose to use razors to eliminate unwanted hair, but the razor only cuts the top of the hair. The hair will grow back, and for some people it might grow back quickly. The hair can grow back so quickly, that you might find that you will need to shave every day to keep the area smooth. You also run the risk of getting cut or the razor might make your skin overly sensitive.
Shaving is time consuming, so you must set aside time to shave, especially during the summer months.
Some women try waxing, but the process can be more painful than shaving, and it can be more expensive. The results from waxing lasts longer than shaving. In most cities, you can usually find spas that wax various parts of the body. Waxing is usually completed in private, and the process entails pouring warm wax onto the area and using a material to quickly pull the hair out. The waxing could be quick, depending on how much hair has grown in the area. The technician might need to apply several different treatments during a session.
A bikini laser treatment could provide you with longer lasting results. You should consult with a technician who is qualified to perform this service. The technician might ask that you allow the hair to grow out so that the laser can find them. Dark hair is usually easier to remove than blonde or white hair. The technician will let you know if you will need to have several different visits to complete process. The process could result in a more permanent relief to hair growing in this area.
Bikini laser treatment might not be comfortable, but it could put an end to the bumps that you might have as the result of shaving. You also do not have to worry about ingrown hairs that could become infected. If you decide to have the procedure, you should make sure that the company that is completing the process is skilled in this area and the technician is well experienced. You should ask about the specific technician who will complete the procedure for you. You need to know the length of time that the technician has been working in hair removal. You can also ask if the technician will be able to help you based on your specific skin tone and hair color. Of course, you would want to know the price of the service, especially if you will need to return for future procedures.
Some people think that they will only need one service, but it is not unusual to have multiple services to remove all of the hair. Since hair grows at different rates, the technician would want you to return to make sure that all of the hair has been removed. This will help to reduce the number of strays that you have. In any case, you want to be sure that the company is reputable and that the service people have years of experience in hair removal.

Can Sleeping Make You Grow Taller Naturally?

By

Have you ever measured your height in the morning after waking up and then again in the evening before going to bed? You should do that as a little experiment and you'll be amazed by the height difference. You may not believe me now but the difference might be as much as an inch. So, I think the question if sleeping can make you grow taller is quite a good one.
See, to increase your height you need some kind of program or plan. It's almost like being in a fitness program where you want to gain muscle or lose weight, only this time you want to grow taller. You are going to do regular exercises that can naturally stimulate your body's growth hormones and also lengthen your bones in your legs and spine. Just like in a fitness program, you also need sufficient rest. And I don't mean a quick power nap in the afternoon or a siesta. No, what your body needs is a real good rest in the form of sleep. For best results, you should sleep for about nine to ten hours every night. However, don't sleep less than eight hours.
I can tell you right now that any good height gain program is using sleep as part of its methods. There is no way around plenty of sleep if you want to increase your height naturally by several inches. The reason for that is that good sleep not only recovers your body from all the exercises you do on a regular basis, the first couple of hours of sleep are also responsible for releasing growth hormones. Hence, the longer you sleep, the better are your chances at having more growth hormones released. Moreover, a good sleep relaxes your spine and decompresses it. A decompressed spine can make you taller overnight. If you did the experiment I described in the introduction, you'll see this first hand. That's why, when you are sleeping, you should lie flat on your back and thus allow your spine to relax, stretch and decompress.
It's funny how things we had to do in our childhood somehow hold true even when we are adults. Only this time, there are no parents telling us to do them, so we usually neglect these kinds of habits. Do you remember how when we were little, our parents would always order us to go to bed early and sleep enough so we can become tall and strong? That's exactly what I mean. Sometimes, we'd be better off keeping these kinds of habits from our childhood, like in this case. Now there are even scientific studies where doctors were able to prove that sleeping increases our chances of growing taller. As it relates to increasing your height, it is extremely hard to know what the decisive factor is going to be. Everyone's body is different, so the best thing you can do is implementing as many methods that have been proven to work for others. Sleep is always playing a major role in this.
The best part is that you already know how to do this. It's easy and you can start immediately. Promise yourself to sleep at least eight hours flat on your back for the next eight weeks and you have taken off on a good start. To discover more about how to grow taller naturally, continue reading on http://www.getupworkout.com.

Choosing the Right Eye Cream Based on Ingredients

By

Choosing the right eye cream is one part challenging and one part fun. It's fun because at the end of the day, you are supposed to get a good eye cream that will help you get rid of common eye problems including but not limited to eye bags, dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles. Choosing is also challenging because with the presence of a lot of options in the market, it's easy to get the wrong one. And when you do get the wrong one, it might present more problems on your face that you also need to solve before getting worse.
The first thing that you need to look for in a good eye cream is the science that is behind it. Some are based on half-cooked principles while others are based on facts. Established science like cell regeneration and stem cell research should back the product that you are about to use on your skin. These are important aspects in making sure that your skin always stays young and youthful.
Eyeliss is a component of the best eye cream that you should not forget. Eyeliss takes care of the eye bags that you might see on your face. First, what are eye bags? These are the accumulated fat pockets or deposits that remained under your eyes when you did not get enough sleep. This results in puffiness, as though you have been crying. If you don't want others to get the wrong impression, make sure that you use the right eye product regularly. Eyeliss removes eye bags by making sure that the fat globules will be dissolved and water retention will recede. Though this has something to do with hormones, it's also connected to getting enough sleep.
Another important ingredient to consider is Haloxyl, which is the best in breaking down the clotted blood from the vessels of your eyes. These vessels might show the dark color that is blood when the sensitive skin covering them is exposed to too much light. Chrysin is another important component of a good eye product that is assigned to making sure that the darkness recedes smoothly. It works well with Haloxyl and together they make the unbeatable team.
Last but not the least, you should watch out for Matrixyl. It is normally seen on wrinkle products, but since it is effective in removing wrinkles, it has also been added in the best eye product to make sure that fine lines around the eyes are eliminated.
Mark A. Robbins loves to give advice on things that he knows about. Since he is a researcher and writer at the same time, he knows about eye cream and wrinkle cream products and the likes more than the average people. His goal in posting his articles is so that people will share information.

The Best Weight Loss Program Is the Most Realistic One

By

In our desperation to shed pounds and achieve the ideal figure, we tend to resort to drastic measures. Fasting, giving up carbohydrates and subsisting on liquid diets and chemical supplements are a few examples of unhealthy choices. The market also happens to be flooded with different types of diets created by different doctors and health gurus, that the choices can be overwhelming for the average dieter. In fact, some of them require you to look for exotic ingredients that are sold in specialty stores frequented by chefs (read: expensive).
But if you look at weight maintenance at its core, it really all boils down to certain lifestyle changes. True weight loss can't be achieved and sustained over a limited period of time. It requires you to develop permanent habits that will not only remove excess poundage but also keep it off well into your golden years. The best weight loss program for any person not only calls for an overhaul of your lifestyle, but also poses realistic suggestions. To give you an idea of what they are, here are five examples:
1. The best weight loss program gives you a comprehensive - not restrictive - menu of food items that you can choose from. The recommended dishes must also be easy to prepare and pocket-friendly; no fancy ingredients, no high-tech cooking gadgets required. It must also be flexible in the sense that if you are unable to obtain a particular ingredient, then you can substitute it for something else. The problem with other diet programs is that they are so ironclad that they leave no room for substitution, which poses a real headache for the dieter whose friendly neighborhood grocer doesn't have a wide variety of stock. Such minor irritations can lead to frustration and end with the dieter giving up on the entire program.
2. Another key feature of the best weight loss program is that it does not forbid you to eat your favorite foods but instead encourages you to have them in healthier portions. It's a realistic and welcome trade off. You can still have your white chocolate cheesecake, but this time in a smaller slice and not your usual slab and without drizzling it with raspberry sauce. This trade off is one of the examples of lifestyle changes that are kind to a struggling dieter and easy to incorporate into daily eating patterns.
3. Exercise should be a component of the best weight loss program you can pick for yourself. However, the program should not impose expensive gym memberships or fancy exercise gadgets on you. If you can afford it, then by all means sign up for one and learn more about healthy lifestyle changes and other diet tips from your personal trainer. But essentially it should give you inexpensive options - whether it's jogging around your neighborhood or working out with simple weights in your very own home. The venue is not important. What matters is the QUALITY of your workout.
4. It encourages you to give up unhealthy vices like smoking and drinking but not to do it cold turkey. Realistically speaking, the cold turkey method will only leave you crying for your fix after just a few days. The key is to do it gradually. For example, if you enjoy having cocktails three times a week with your co-workers, start paring them down to twice a week, then once a week. Lifestyle changes as far as your vices are concerned should be worked on slowly but surely in order to avoid relapses.
5. The best weight loss program not does forbid you from accepting invitations to parties and other special occasions like weddings were there will surely be a lot of food served. Too many harsh diet programs insist that we decline social invites so we don't break our diet streak. But that is quite unfair to the dieter, and a good program will always make room for special occasions while giving tips on how to get back on the diet wagon after you've indulged.
In summation, the best weight loss program is one that can be easily and realistically incorporated into your daily routine and budget. It does not demand the most exotic or expensive ingredients and complementary diet aids. It does not impose Draconian methods or deprivation tactics. All it asks of you is the ability to make sensible lifestyle changes, make healthy and informed choices and a real desire to get into the best shape you can be. Keep in mind that no program will work if you don't have that internal motivation to be fit and trim. You have to really want it in order to succeed.
Don't fall for fad diets and unhealthy weight loss supplements. The best weight loss program offers sensible suggestions and easy to follow tips without resorting to drastic measures.

Liposuction Surgery Busts Fat

By
Liposuction surgery is the answer for many individuals who are struggling with excess fatty deposits that haven't responded to diet and exercise. These bumps, lumps and bulges can be frustrating to the person who is trying to shed them in order to have a sleek, toned body. These unsightly fatty pockets can make it difficult to find clothes that fit and can take their toll on a person's self esteem. Sometimes the fat shows up after pregnancy, after weight gain and loss or simply due to an individual's genetic patterning. Some families have DNA that causes bulges to show up on bellies or hips or thighs. All the hours at the gym or months on lean diets may have minimal effect. For these individuals, liposuction surgery can be a solution to their problems.

General Information About the Technique
There are various types of lipo on the market today, including procedures done with lasers and other devices. These new technological advances are allowing surgeons to remove the adipose more easily and satisfactorily. These techniques are performed in a hospital or clinical setting under some sort of anesthesia. The length of the operation will depend on the individual case, such as the person's health history, the type of liposuction being used and how much fat will be removed. Typical lengths of procedures range for an hour or so to four hours. This is an outpatient surgery unless the patient is having simultaneous operations performed. There will be a certain amount of pain but the doctor will prescribe the appropriate painkillers to keep the patient comfortable. Initially, there will be some swelling and uneven surfaces but this should stabilize with a few months. Compression garments will be worn post-op to aid in healing.
The Best Candidates
The optimum candidates for liposuction surgery are those that are at or near their ideal weight, are healthy, have a balanced diet and maintain an exercise regime. Lipo is not a weight loss technique but rather a way to sculpt away inches. Candidates should be in general good shape but just troubled by fatty pockets on specific areas such as belly, thighs, buttocks, hips or facial regions. Some men who have developed female-like breasts opt for lipo to regain their manly chest. Patients must commit to keeping up their healthy lifestyle of lean foods, regular exercise and staying at their ideal weight in order to keep up their new svelte appearance. If a person gains weight, the fat will return. Being a non-smoker is always a plus because smoking cigarettes is known to hamper healing.
Is liposuction surgery for you? If you are troubled by your bulges and frustrated by their stubbornness in response to your healthy lifestyle, you may be ready to bust your fat and go for this solution. If a person is ready to take a more aggressive stance against his or her body's unsightly lumps and bumps, it would be wise to schedule an appointment with a reputable cosmetic surgeon to find out more.
Liposuction surgery is a popular way to get rid of fat that won't respond to exercise or dieting. Find out the details of this procedure: cosmeticsurgery411.com.

Fake malaria drugs could 'put millions at risk' BBC

Mosquito
Malaria is spread by parasites introduced into the bloodstream by mosquito bite
Fake and poor quality anti-malarial drugs are threatening efforts to control the disease in Africa and could put millions of lives at risk, scientists say.
The counterfeit medicines could harm patients and promote drug resistance among malaria parasites, warns the study, funded by the Wellcome Trust.
Malaria is believed to kill about 800,000 people a year.
Some of the fake tablets are said to have originated in China.
The researchers, from the Wellcome Trust-Mahosot Hospital-Oxford University Tropical Medicine Research Collaboration, published their work in the Malaria Journal.
They examined fake and substandard anti-malarial drugs that were found on sale in 11 African countries between 2002 and 2010.
They discovered that some counterfeits contained a mixture of the wrong pharmaceutical ingredients which would initially alleviate the symptoms of malaria but would not cure it.
Some of the ingredients in the tablets could cause potentially serious side effects, the study found, especially if they were mixed with other drugs a patient might be taking, like anti-retrovirals to treat HIV.
Drug resistance
The malaria parasite can, after a period of time, develop resistance to the drugs being used to treat it.
This has happened in the past with medicines such as chloroquine and mefloquine.
The researchers warn that the fake drugs could lead to the same effect on artemisinin, one of the most effective drugs now being used to treat malaria.
They say small quantities of artemisinin derivatives are being put in some of the counterfeit products to ensure that they pass authenticity tests.
However, at the level it is present, these drugs are unlikely to rid the body of malaria parasites, but could enable them to build up resistance to artemisinin, the study warns.
The Asian origin of the fake drugs was identified using traces of pollen found in some of the tablets.
The lead researcher on the study, Dr Paul Newton, called for urgent measures from African governments to tackle counterfeit anti-malarials.
"Failure to take action will put at risk the lives of millions of people, particularly children and pregnant women," he said.
"The enormous investment in the development, evaluation and deployment of anti-malarials is wasted if the medicines that patients actually take are, due to criminality or carelessness, of poor quality and do not cure."

Grab Your Guy Some Guyliner

By

I like to think that I'm on the forefront of beauty and makeup trends, but when my friend Maria informed him that guyliner isn't a Mediterranean cruise ship I was puzzled. Turns out it 's a term used to describe the stuff that some guys like to apply to their eyelashes. In other words - eyeliner!
I punched "guyliner" into the search box at urbandictionary.com and found the following definition:
Eyeliner applied on a man. Once formerly the territory of only homosexuals, punk rockers and showmen, well-applied guyliner is slowly but surely becoming more socially acceptable for heterosexual men who ascribe to metrosexualism, glamour, and general fabulousness."
Wow! Guess I've been living under a rock for a while! But, heck, the practice of guys dressing up their lashes with eyeliner isn't exactly a groundbreaking discovery in the world of beauty and makeup. It's been taking the fashion world by storm since 4,000 B.C. That's when the pharaohs of ancient Egypt liked to apply green and black liner to their eyelashes and eyebrows.
And let's not forget 1920's screen legend and heart throb to millions of women, Rudolph Valentino. He wore so much eyeliner in his silent movies that an editorial in the Chicago Tribune accused him of "effeminization of the American male." This apparently ticked Valentino off, and in order to defend his manhood, he challenged the reporter to a boxing match. Unfortunately, the movie star died in New York City before this could happen.
The list of celebrities using guyliner didn't stop with Valentino, and include Kurt Cobain, Johnny Depp and more recently rocker Brandon Flowers of the group Killers. You're in good company if this born-again trend appeals to your sense of style. I have to admit that it adds some spice to the otherwise drab parade of civil servants in grey flannel pants that walk past my coffee shop everyday.
Any guy who is confident enough to use eyeliner, is a guy who probably won't have a problem dropping by the local cosmetic counter to pick up one of the many popular brands made for women. But why should they have all the fun? A number of smart companies have recognized this trend and are marketing eyeliner especially branded for the male market.
Guyliner typically comes in the form of a khol pencil that is designed to create a subtle, but defined look to the contours of a guy's eyes. Some folks selling this stuff claim it will make eyes appear "more dramatic, larger and seductive." Wow! That's a powerful pencil. The few guyliner products that are available are inexpensive when compared to similar products that women use. Isn't that always the case!
My boyfriend could definitely use a bit of an edge. I think I'm going to grab him some guyliner!

What Cleaning Supplies Are Needed for Baby Change Stations

By

Baby change stations are an essential part of every nursery and public toilet. As with all bathrooms, you will need to make sure the baby change station is always kept tidy and fresh to ensure optimum hygiene. To keep your baby change table presentable, you will need to stock up on a variety of cleaning supplies.
  • Organic Surface Spray: A multi-purpose surface spray is an essential for getting rid of harmful germs. Remember that babies will put anything they can find in their mouths, so every single surface needs to be sparkling and grime free. Choose cleaning supplies that leave light and fresh scents that won't irritate delicate noses or skin.

  • Storage Caddy: Use a handy cleaning supplies caddy, either hanging off the table or in a nearby trolley, to hold spray bottles and disinfectant wipes close at hand. Time is of the essence when attending to germs and it is always a good idea to make the process as easy as possible. You should try to encourage everyone that uses the baby change table to use the cleaning supplies caddy for spot germ killing.

  • Scrubbing Brush: For weekly wash downs, a robust scrubbing brush is needed. This tool can be used to get rid of built up grime at edges and in corners, reducing germs and visible dirt. Use your scrubbing brush in conjunction with other intense cleaning supplies, such as pure soap or strong detergent.

  • Mild Cleaners: Remember that babies are much more sensitive to harsh chemicals than adults. Where dilute bleach might be perfectly fine for the regular bathroom, you will have to find an alternative solution for the baby change station. Choose mild, non-toxic, low-scent and natural solutions or even products designed specifically for babies.

  • Air Freshener: The baby change station doesn't have to smell bad with the right cleaning supplies up your sleeve! Keep an aerosol can of air freshener in a sweet and fresh scent nearby or mount an automatic spray unit to the wall. Remember to only use non-toxic and hypo-allergenic supplies in the nursery.

  • Nappy Bin: Keep a large bin tucked underneath the baby change table for easy disposal or storage of dirty nappies. Having a dedicated bin allows you to separate smelly and germy nappies from other waste in your home or business and keeps the whole are hygienic. Pair the bin with other cleaning supplies such as large, lightly-scented bin liners.
